Chapter 12

Kelly put down her phone regretfully when Laine told her that she had to get to work. It was just as well, anyway; Kelly had been so distracted that she’d forgotten to unpack. The conference had left her full of ideas for outfits she wanted to put together—and then every moment that she hadn’t spent dressing herself or taking pictures, she was texting Laine.

So she turned away from the phone and shook herself. Unpack and tidy up the apartment, she told herself firmly. And after that, she would have to get back to her job applications. No more messing around.

No, before that she would call her parents. She was more likely to chicken out of that than the job applications. The new school year was months away; coming out to her family when she’d only just come out to herself was a higher priority.

The first thing she saw, when she opened the suitcase, was her blue vintage dress. The poor delicate thing lay in a rumpled heap, but when Kelly pulled it out, most of the wrinkles fell away—except for the ones in the front, right around where her waist had been. Heat rushed to her cheeks and between her legs as the sight of the wrinkles vividly recalled the reason they were so pronounced. Laine had been on top of her, kissing and kissing her, and then—

The doorbell rang before she could get too immersed in her recollections. Surprised, she laid the dress out on the bed so she could decide whether it was bad enough to warrant dry cleaning, then went back out to the living room to answer the door.

Standing in the hall, his shoulders hunched and his hands shoved in his pockets, was John.

Kelly took an inadvertent step back. She hadn’t expected him. In fact, she hadn’t even thought about him in more than twenty-four hours—which was amazing, considering she used to think of him on a regular basis and had intended to marry him.

The fact that she hadn’t even thought that he might be the one at her door just reaffirmed that she had been right to break up with him. She didn’t feel any desire or even any warmth when she looked at him—not like she did with Laine. Even if it turned out that her attraction to Laine was just an infatuation, even if she ended up single for the rest of her life, she was glad she had done it.

But he looked so sad. Barely looking up to catch her eye, he said in a low voice, “Can I come in?”

She opened the door wordlessly, moving aside so he could enter. She didn’t want to turn him away. And if he had come to apologize—he certainly looked apologetic—then she wanted to hear and accept it.

“I’m sorry,” he said as he entered. “I’m so sorry, Kelly. I can’t believe I lost my temper like that.”

She nodded, closing the door but being careful not to lock it. “I thought you might be coming to apologize.
